Comparison to “Fight”: In English, “fight” is a very broad term. You can “fight with your brother,” “fight for your rights,” or “fight a cold.”
战斗 (zhàndòu) is much more specific. It's the equivalent of “combat” or “battle.” You would
never use
战斗 to describe a verbal argument or a fistfight between two people on the street (for that, you'd use
打架 (dǎjià)). Using
战斗 in that context would sound bizarre and overly dramatic, like saying “The two children engaged in mortal combat over the toy.”
